"The
Fortunes of
War at Rome"
Beneath
the century
old Colliseum
in Rome, the
Nazis are
shown triumphantly
parading American
and British
prisoners,
captured in
the ferocious
action at
Anzio. Field
Marshal Kesselring
takes a good
look southward
through his
field glasses,
where the
Allied drive
is. A forced
evacuation
of Rome is
ordered. Beneath
the same century
old Colliseum
in Rome we
see Allied
heavy equipment
rolling in,
with General
Mark Clark,
the center
of attention
for all the
cheering Romans.
The allied
advance rolls
through Rome,
and we see
the effects
of Allied
naval shelling.
Nazi heavy
equipment
is utterly
destroyed,
becoming dead
symbols of
a dead cause.

United News
Newsreel.
8
- 17 December
1943. Narrated
by John Huston
and produced
by Frank Capra.
Opening by
General Mark
Clark.
This
film was written,
directed and
narrated by
John Huston,
the American
movie director
who, while
serving as
an Army lieutenant,
filmed the
battle for
the military.
It was produced
by the Army
Pictorial
Service, Signal
Corps, which
was under
the supervision
of Frank Capra.
Director Frank
Capra enlisted
shortly after
the Japanese
Attack on
Pearl Harbor.
He was assigned
to work directly
under Chief
of Staff George
C. Marshall,
the most senior
officer in
command of
the Army,
who would
later create
the Marshall
Plan and be
awarded a
Nobel Peace
Prize.
So
graphic was
the film that
it was described
as antiwar
by the military
brass at the
War Department.
The film was
cut from five
to three reels
before censors
allowed it
to be released
in 1944. It
was later
re-edited
for the television
series “The
Big Picture.”
The
Battle of
San Pietro
was a major
engagement
from 8 - 17
December 1943,
in the Italian
Campaign of
World War
II, involving
Allied Forces
attacking
from the south
against heavily
fortified
positions
of the German
"Winter
Line"
in and around
the town of
San Pietro
Infine, just
south of Monte
Cassino about
halfway between
Naples and
Rome.
A
German panzer
battalion
inflicted
heavy casualties
on American
forces trying
to take the
700-year-old
Italian village
before withdrawing
from the town.
San
Pietro was
reduced almost
entirely to
rubble. The
eventual Allied
victory in
the battle
was crucial
in the ultimate
drive to the
north to liberate
Rome.
