About This Website

This website is owned and built by me, Gary Smith.
Felix B. Mestas, Jr. was my uncle.

Creating a website around my uncle's story was something I always planned on doing but I never imagined where it would go. After reading about his death I became aware that the story is really more about the battles fought during World War II and the men in those battles, not just one man, and to exclude them from this website would be wrong.
Felix B. Mestas, Jr. was the uncle of Gary Smith,a website developer in San Francisco
This website is for my uncle's unit, the Army's 88th Infantry Division Blue Devils. While the time they were in combat - March 4 1944 to May 2 1945 - the 88th suffered over four thousand battle casualties, of whom twelve hundred were killed in action.

Many heros died during the war and whether at Battle Mountain or Iwo Jima, the accounts of their bravery are overwhelming. An area dedicated to the Blue Devils is called 'Decorated Heros' and has all of the 344 Medal Of Honor Citations awarded to soldiers in World War II.

There are 62 other names engraved on the Mt.Mestas Memorial Monument of people from Huerfano County who died during the war. My goal is to have each one of them represented here on this website so that we all can know who they were.

Look around while you're here, there's lots to read and stuff to look at. Major areas are up that you can check out and if you find any typos, broken links or want to make a suggestion, let me know at email: Hello@MtMestas.com

Please consider becoming a Contributor if you can. I'm looking to add any clippings, pictures or articles related to my uncle or to Mt.Mestas that you don't see here. I'm especially looking for pictures of Junior or hearing from anybody that knew him. The Invasion of Italy is one of the least documented areas of the war. I'm looking for any stories or photos of the 350th Infantry Regiment and 88th Infantry Division or any photos taken in Italy during World War II. If you can help or if your family member is listed on the Mt.Mestas Memorial and you would like to contribute something, visit the Contributors or Contact Us pages to find out more.

Thanks for visiting MtMestas.com. I hope you enjoy your stay. Come back often

Peace,
Gary Smith
